Getting Started

Evaluating Your Student

Not only do we care about our students’ academic success, we care about them as individuals. We take the time to get to know their individual needs and we listen.

When a new student enrolls at Math Addvantage, we discuss the student’s needs with the parents and gain an understanding of the student’s math background. A curriculum-supportive program then is recommended. If over time the tutor determines that our testing program needs to be implemented, a test will be administered. The purpose of the standardized test is to identify the student’s mathematical gaps and establish a program to fill those gaps.

While some students flourish with private tutoring, others do best in semi-private or group sessions. Regardless of the format, students generally meet with the same tutor each week. Our intent is to establish consistency and best understand each person’s unique learning style. To learn more about assessing your student’s needs, contact us at info@mathaddvantage.com.

Session Structure

Sessions are loosely divided into three sections. The first section is a question-and-answer time based on any material seen that week. Many students are proactive and come with questions and areas of difficulty already marked. Some students are not sure what they do not understand, so the tutor will ask questions and have the student do problems to make sure they feel comfortable with that week’s material.

The second section is spent on the homework of the night. There are two reasons for this. First, students feel like they achieved an accomplishment while at Math Addvantage and, secondly, students can feel confident about what they are handing in. We will often not finish the homework, because we are not solely homework help, but they will know how to do the problems to complete their homework.

The last section of the student’s session is spent utilizing a method of teaching called pre-teaching. Essentially, we highlight new concepts that are upcoming to give them a preview of material with which they may soon be working. This last piece proves to be quite helpful for many students. However, an upcoming test or quiz is always a session's top priority.
